The Content Continuum

I love to write music and I love to write stories. I also enjoy providing information on various topics ranging from sports to computers. What can make this more gratifying is knowing that others genuinely like reading or listening to what I have published online. This yet another reason the Internet is so wonderful.

The Content Continuum

Of course I am not alone in my endeavor to share my expression across the World Wide Web. And we all know how it has grown into a marketplace for businesses of all sizes. As a result the placing of things on the Internet has become a strategy. In fact in many ways, it is a business in its own right.

Much thought goes into the building of a web page regardless of what it contains but just as important is getting people to know about your site. One theme I have found over and over in the discussion of advertising or making your site available is web content. Many say content is King when it comes to increasing traffic to your site.

Quite simple web content is the textual, visual or even aural content that is provided on a web site. By way of text, images, sounds, videos, animation, or perhaps a combination of any of these, one can supply a product to sell or information to share. Where this becomes significant in site awareness is on a search engine. Why is this?

What a search engine does is it filters through index text easily and if the information in the content is close or related to what the searcher is looking for it will be presented as a site for the seeker to consider visiting. Thus the content continuum is a vital component.

Here you have your content on one hand and on the other you have search engines. How do you make from the two one complete process? This is where it is said that content is King as it relates to SEO. It is more than just content however.

It is necessary to provide your visitors with appealing content on a well organized site, a web page that can be navigated with ease and fulfill the purpose it was assembled for in a satisfying way. Whether you are selling a service or product, providing instruction or information, or simply inviting a social forum it is imperative that your content is fresh and magnetic.

I have found it also beneficial to understand the basic workings of a search engine. It is operated under the application of a programmed algorithm. This algorithm is a mathematical formula that is fed or programmed into the operation of a search engine. It adheres to a set of "rules" that consists of a few selected items of criteria. For example Google uses such criteria as page ranking from recursive web scores based on a weighted sum from human generated links. They also have items such as relevance and geography fused into their algorithm. The algorithm also applies the commonality of key words or phrases. Algorithms are also a mechanism to guard against spam. It is also important to note that each search engine has its own algorithm, similar in function and premise, but somewhat different nonetheless.

This sheds a little brighter light for those of us trying to apply SEO into our web practices. Knowing the basic function of a search engine and the algorithm utilization should affect our choice of body copy, title components and we would benefit from knowing our page ranking and make wise use of our anchor text. (The anchor text being: http://readme.com. Readme is the anchor text in this example). So, as you can see there are elements that are "on your page" and elements that are "off page" designed to be tagged on a search engine result page. So let me highlight a couple ways to find a content continuum between a web page and a web search.

Relevance - Any search algorithm will connect relevant items to a search. Whether it is keywords or the method in how the search words are used, the algorithm is programmed to identify relevant titles or content. So using keywords in the title of your web page or within the first few lines of your text will increase the percentage of times an algorithm links your page to a relevant search. Also a frequent use of key words can improve the odds of finding your way onto more search result pages. Beware! There also instructions within an algorithm to toss out stuffing a page with keywords so don't overdo it.

Know your search engines - It is helpful to adapt to different subtleties to appeal to different algorithms used by the major search engine companies. The main items, like relevance, are always in play regardless of the search engine.

Factors of note - Page rankings have variables also to consider. For most advertisements the click-through rate is a common measurement. It is done by a percentage. This is supposed to, in theory, off-set the difference between people just clicking on an ad as compared to those who end up responding to an ad. Another common measure of web ranking is a result of linking, which would include the links used from basic search results. These are examples of why SEO proponents put so much emphasis on web page ranking.

And so the Internet world continues to grow and proves to be a useful and fun tool in connecting people in a social or informative arena and providing another avenue of commerce for businesses of all sizes.

What is Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization or SEO

is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results for targeted keywords. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS) or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site. SEO can also target different kinds of searches, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines.

As a marketing strategy for increasing a site's relevance, SEO considers how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO efforts may involve a site's coding, presentation, and structure, as well as fixing problems that could prevent search engine indexing programs from fully spidering a site. Another class of techniques, known as black hat SEO or spamdexing, use methods such as link farms and keyword stuffing that tend to harm search engine user experience. Search engines look for sites that employ these techniques and may remove them from their indices.
